How to Choose the Right Dehumidifier

compressor Dehumidifier Guide: Best Vankool Models & Uses

If the humid Southern summers are making you uncomfortable and causing mold in your home, it might be time to get a dehumidifier.

Do you need a dehumidifier?

If you’re sneezing, coughing, or experiencing allergies, and you’ve noticed any of these signs:

  • Condensation on windows
  • Mildew spots on walls
  • A musty smell
  • Watermarks in the basement
  • Rotting wood
  • Peeling wallpaper

you might have a humidity problem. High humidity often affects basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and attics, indicating you may need a dehumidifier.

What is refrigerative dehumidifiers ?

The most commonly used dehumidifier is the refrigerant type. It’s affordable, easy to use, and effective for most home and commercial settings. Also called mechanical dehumidifiers, they work best in temperatures of 20°C and above and with humidity levels of 50% and higher. These dehumidifiers activate when the room’s humidity exceeds the set point.

– How refrigerative dehumidifiers work ?

Imagine you’re enjoying a soda on a warm day and notice moisture on the outside of the can. This happens because as the air cools, it loses its ability to hold moisture, which then condenses on the colder surface. A dehumidifier works in a similar way.

Refrigerant dehumidifiers work by cooling the air to a temperature where the water vapor in it condenses. The condensed water is drained away, and the dry air is reheated and returned to the room. This process involves drawing moist air over a cold coil (the evaporator), where the moisture condenses and is collected. The now-dry air then passes over a warm coil (the condenser), gets reheated, and is released back into the space as warm, dry air.

Main component parts:refrigerant dehumidifier

  • Fan Compressor: Compresses and expands refrigerant gas, like freon, to cool the dehumidifier’s coils.
  • Reheater: Captures and collects heat generated during the cooling process.
  • Compressor Cooling Coils
  • Reservoir

Many dehumidifiers also include a humidistat, which lets you set your preferred humidity level. A humidistat has two parts: a sensing element and a relay amplifier. The sensing element has two metal conductors; changes in humidity alter the electrical resistance between them. The relay amplifier measures this resistance and signals the dehumidifier to turn on or off. These components work together to help make your home more comfortable.

– Where do refrigerant dehumidifiers work best?

Refrigerant dehumidifiers can be wall- or floor-mounted and are ideal for controlling humidity in various settings, including:

  • Production areas
  • Warehouses and product storage
  • Museums, galleries, and archives
  • Leisure facilities
  • Vehicle garages and aircraft hangars
  • Clothing and equipment drying rooms

They are also excellent for carpet drying and flood restoration, removing moisture from carpets, underlays, walls, sub-floors, building structures, and furnishings.

What’s the Difference from air conditioner?

Could your air conditioner help reduce humidity in your home, too? If you have an A/C, it functions similarly to a dehumidifier, pulling warm air in and letting it cycle over cold coils. The difference is that it does not reheat the air before exhausting it — that’s how it keeps your space cool. Also, your A/C does not have a humidistat and thus cannot detect relative humidity — just temperature. Once it succeeds in cooling your home to your ideal temperature, it may stop running. This might allow the humidity to climb again, making your house feel like it’s hotter than it actually is.

– Compressor dehumidifiers: pros and cons

Compressor dehumidifiers, also known as refrigerants, can remove between 10L and 25L of moisture per day. They are best suited for areas in your home that are at room temperature or warmer. For these dehumidifiers to work effectively, the room temperature must be higher than the coils’ temperature. They don’t perform well in cold basements, garages, conservatories, or caravans.

  • Ideal temperature range: 15-30°C
  • Suboptimal performance: 10-15°C
  • Poor performance: 5-10°C
  • Will not work: Below 5°C

Pros:

  • Most common type of dehumidifier and widely available
  • Collects large amounts of moisture in warm and humid conditions
  • More energy-efficient than desiccant dehumidifiers above 15°C
  • Typically have a higher capacity than equivalent desiccant models
  • High performance for dehumidifying average home spaces at room temperature

Cons:

  • Only effective in warmer and higher humidity conditions
  • Louder than desiccant models
  • Poor performance in environments below 15°C

What to know before you buy a dehumidifier

 Sizing dehumidifiers

Humidifiers are classified by their ability to remove moisture, measured in “pints of moisture removed per day (24 hours).” For example, a 30-pint dehumidifier can remove 30 pints of moisture from the air under standard testing conditions (60% humidity and 65°F). The size also suggests the area it can cover (in square feet), helping you determine the right dehumidifier size for your needs.

– Water tank size

Another important feature to consider in a dehumidifier is the size of its water tank, as it affects how quickly the tank fills and how often you’ll need to empty it.

– Key features and functionalities

Once you’ve chosen a dehumidifier that’s the right size and energy-efficient, consider these additional features to find the best fit for your needs:

  • Mobility: Ensure it has a handle and caster wheels if it’s a large unit (over 8L), so you can easily move it around.
  • Adjustable Humidistat: Lets you set your preferred humidity level.
  • Inbuilt Hygrometer: Automatically detects the air’s humidity and can turn the dehumidifier on or off as needed.
  • Automatic Shutoff: Turns off the unit when the desired humidity is reached or the water tank is full.
  • Auto-Reset: Remembers your settings after a power outage or if you unplug it.
  • Defrost Mode: Prevents the unit from freezing in low temperatures.
  • Noise Level: Check the rating to know how loud the dehumidifier will be during operation.
  • Continuous Drainage: Includes a hose for draining the water tank continuously, so you don’t have to empty it manually.
